Today I realized a lot about the Tico culture, which I am not sure if I like or not. Tico's in general are very passive-aggressive people. I am very straight-forward, sometimes mistaken for too aggressive. People who are sensitive and not confrontational can sometimes take my personality the wrong way. People who are the same way as me, or have a little more of a roughness, get a long with me right away. I have almost no real problems with people and everyone usually likes me, but here I feel like no one is going to understand me because I am too much. Sometimes I just want to stand up for people or tell someone to stand up for themselves but my Spanish is not that great yet. It is something I don't think I will ever get used to, and I guess I will have to choose my friends accordingly because I would rather not make enemies here for no reason other then they don't understand me. I can't wait for tomorrow for my trip to Florida to see people who do understand everything in everyway!!
This week has been very eye opening for me. It was my final week of exams for school and I really learned the different processes and ways things worked, or don't work. Studying in Spanish has proven to be very difficult for me.o
I have one class especially. The teacher is Cuban, therefore I do not understand a word he says. I had a great experience with him yesterday. I needed to ask him for an extension on the final exam. I am leaving to go to Florida tomorrow for my mid semester break. The test is next week, but I thought it was this week. I had to have a classmate translate his spanish into spanish to me to understand his directions on how to handle this situation. This all happened in front of the class and had to be quite entertaining. It went something like this: I asked him a question, he responded to me, I looked at my friend, she translated to me, I looked back at him and repeated the process. All of this ocurring all in Spanish which was really odd. Thus, making me not like Cuban Spanish at all. But, I did resolve the problem and I am allowed to go to Florida tomorrow. I registered for next quatrimestre today too. Chemistry and Physics.
I had a fun week at school. I am starting to come out of my shell and speak Spanish more. A funny thing happpened yesterday. I was laying on the tables in the yard at school, and the student advisor came up to me and asked me to speak with a family from Miami. The daughter was looking at coming to the school. It was funny because I was just laying out in the sun really comfortable with my friend and I am just starting to get adjusted. She was using me as an ambassador. Atleast they spoke English!! I got a little sunburnt that day too.
