Semana Santa is holy week. Every Latin American country takes these days off for holy week. Especially Thursday and Friday. Basically the whole country shuts down. The buses don't run. No school, no stores, almost nothing. It is very interesting to see. It is holy week, but everyone I know took it as spring break and went to the beach, relax, or even party. It was actually very peaceful in my apartment for the first time in a long time all weekend. This was like my Spring Break.I
I was told that the week after Semana Santa was our exam week.... man was I wrong!! Apparently teachers here in Costa Rica can change schedules as they want, create tests, not show up, and basically just say oh well not my problem. I have a ticket to fly home to Florida this Saturday the 18th. I already changed the ticket once because of a sudden exam. You cannot buy a one-way ticket to Costa Rica, so I already had my return. Now I find out I have to present our project next Thursday, then take the exam after it. This is due to the fact that the teacher says he has personal things he has to deal with and took off a random week already. Also, today in another class, my teacher decided to tell the class that we have a final exam next Wednesday. We thought the test we took today was the final. No one said anything of course.
Everyone in Costa Rica is very non confrontational and passive aggressive. Therefore, no one stands up to anyone thus many things not getting accomplished. This can be very frustrating when you want something done, or need people to stand up for things. I am getting used to it, but as a person who speaks their mind any time this can be very hard. The best advice I was given was when dealing with the crazy drivers. She said this really confuses them. When they are blowing their horn at you for simply crossing the street, or doing something completely legal, just turn around and give them the finger. They absolutely do not know how to handle this because they are not used to confrontation. I have not tried it yet, but I think I might end up doing it one day, just for fun.
