Graeme round the world
Day 10 Mon 3/4
During the night we sailed to Floreana, didn't get much sleep as pretty rough and my cabin was below decks. When we dropped anchor about 6am I thought we had hit some rocks!! Stopped at post office bay where you leave un stamped postcards and visitors pick up postcards from their own country and either hand deliver on stick a local stamp on free of charge. Kirsty and Amy I have sent one to you so let's see how loñg it will take to turn up. Went down a rickety old ladder to a lava hole, which was about 50m long and pitch black luckily some of us had torches.
Played football on the beach with the crew of 3 of the ships and impressed them and myself by winning a match with a backward header from a thrown in to score the winning goal, only bad thing was a rubbered all the skin off one of my toes, so walking with a limp now!
Snorkled at Devil's Crown, which is the reamins of a partially submerged volcanic cone, where we had been briefed there would be shark, everyone was really nervous as the Crown was a bit out at sea and the water looked deep anyway, they said it was ok, so we rolled backwards over the side and saw sharks straight away. It was so weird to have them swimming a few meters directly below you. I think I got a stiff neck trying to watch all of them at the same time. Swam with turtles, fabulously coloured fish and sea lions, which was amazing as they would come straight at you and then swerve at the last moment, they just wanted to play. Saw star fish an octopus all curled up and a sting ray.
Went by speed boat to Punta Cormorant to, where we saw Flamingo nests, which were high off the ground so they don't have to bend down too far and beautiful Flour Beach where we saw schools of turtles and rays swimming just off the beach. We also named it the beach of death as we found a dead seal probably attacked by sharks, 2 half fish, and a dead bird, but apart from that the beach was thriving with life and where the turtles nested. Had briefing for the next day and a fab dinner and drinks on deck then the cook saw sharks circling our boat so he threw over some chicken and we had a mini feeding frenzy, with a giant turtle and a sea lion joining in. It was so exciting watching them as our torches caught there outline and eyes from the back of the boat, literally inches away :o)
