Goughie and Gater: le tour!!
We spent about a week in Arequipa in the South of Peru, although unfortunately both our stomachs have taken a bit of a beating!
When we weren't ill, we had a couple of big nights out in the town, although this sadly affected Sarah's sightseeing ability as we discovered when we went to visit the famous Convent in the centre of the town and she managed to collapse and be sick in the middle of it. We're sure there's got to be some holy law against that but the Peruvians very helpfully assumed she had altitude sickness and tried to give her oxygen...hmmm had more to do with the rum the night before i think....
We made it to see the famous "Juanita", the ice mummy, which was fairly interesting but she looked kind of shrivelled, and then we went on a 2 day tour of the Colca Canyon. The tour was an absolute disaster from the start as Sarah had the sickness bug (not great for a 4 hour bumpy ride through the desert), our crazy guide kept trying his luck with Claire, and the first day consisted of showing us different breeds of llamas/alpacas. Sarah tried some of the Alpaca meat, feeling no guilt as she had slept through seeing them earlier on. The organised folklore evening was just cringeworthy and had obviously been aimed at keeping American tourists entertained.
The second day of the tour was also a bit of a joke as we got up ridiculously early (5am) to see some Condors (just big birds as far as we are concerned), and the "continental" breakfast we were promised never materialised. The canyon itself was a let down as it is meant to be the second deepest in the world, but it couldn't even compare to the scenery on the Inca Trail. Anyway, we returned safe and sound to our hostel in Arequipa and ordered ourselves a pizza from the Hut (yes they have it over here!). Bolivia next!!!
