Goughie and Gater: le tour!!
We left Chile on Tuesday, ready for our relatively short bus trip (11 hours) across the border to Salta in Argentina. Everything seemed to be fine until about 9 hours into the journey the bus stopped. In the middle of nowhere. The driver stuck his head into the bus and informed us that the locals were blocking the road with rubble and weren't letting any vehicles through at all and that we would have to spend the night asleep on the bus. We were not impressed as the woman at the bus agency told us only to bring water for the journey as a "meal"(which turned out to be vile cold meat and rice) and a snack would be provided. As there were no cashpoints in San Pedro we didnt have any dollars nor Argentinian pesos. So a night on the bus with the thought of starvation awaited us.
We woke up on Wednesday to discover that we hadn't moved a centimetre in the previous 12 hours so we decided to march through the road block with our rucksacks on our backs to the other side. Luckily there was a bus on the other side taking people to a random town for an extortionate sum (which we managed to bribe them to accept our few remaining dollars) and then we got a bus from there to Salta.
After the trauma of the previous night, we decided to reward ourselves by booking into a 4 * hotel complete with pool and gym which was fab!!
Salta was a really pretty town, with a nice square and a pink church in the centre. It was strange to see normalish shops and well stocked supermarkets after being in the back of beyond for so long. Sadly we only stayed a day in Salta and set off yesterday at some ungodly hour on our 24 hour journey to the Iguazu falls. We have spent the day today on the Brazilian side of the falls and will be doing the Argentinian side (which is meant to be much more impressive) when we head down to Buenos Aires in a couple of weeks time. The falls are in this really pretty natural park and they definitely made up for the long bus journey!
Off to Rio de Janeiro tomorrow (yet another 24 hour bus journey!) and we are looking forward to sampling some of the nightlife and sunshine (and apparent news of fitties...great as there seems to be just hardcore trekkers here!!)!
