Maybe not Gordon's last trip
Well I finally made it to the reef, along with a few hundred others.......on the biggest and best organised boat trip I have ever taken.
That said, I have now arrived at the difference between the 'traveller' and the tourist.
The traveller goes there (wherever that may be) and the tourist gets taken there ( and sometimes, just taken full stop).
So at the moment I am most definately a tourist as, in the past two days, I have been taken to the oldest rain forest in the world and the largest reef in the world. And I have to say that both operations were quite seamless in their operation.
The rainforest trip did come with the regulation river boat trip to 'look for a crocodile' but what the hell, we saw a crocodile. MInd you I think that short of seal watching, croc watching is pretty much the last wild lifeactivity you would want to undertake. A bit like watching paint dry..unless someone or something falls in the wate, in which case seals leave and crocodiles can be pretty much guaranteed to arrive.
The rainforest section was of interest with details on bugs and plants which only exist under the canopy though we didn't see a cassowary. (I am not going to tell you, you'll have to use your search engine).
The reef was also worth the v isit, albeit I did my coral gazing in a semi-submersible. I may be getting bold enough to kayak and sail but I am not getting into deep water of that kind yet.
Overall, I feel as if I am at present having a holiday in the middle of my trip, if that makes any sense, as I feel I am in a relatively familiar western environment (except when I listen to the newscaster taking about CAINS when the map reads CAIRNS. And the temperature?
Well today was 33 and tomorrow is scheduled for 35 with the humidity at 80% turning one into a walking sauna within yards of leaving aircon.
I have to give a plug for my accomodation and the folks who own it.
PALM VILLAS, PORT DOUGLAS. Spacious self catering rooms, (sixteen) Aircon everywhere, private swimming pool. Intimate, friendly, helpful, advice at every turn. Can't praise highly enough.
I'll have to go now as I need to direct Tuza (owner/manager) and her partner Davo to this site in the hope that they will give me reduced rates next time I visit!
