Heathrow to San Francisco 10 hrs 45 mins, 5,368 miles
San Francisco to Anchorage 4 hrs 58 mins, 2018 miles
Total travel time - 19 hours 29 mins
Total miles - 7386 miles
We were up with the lark this morning at 5.00am, breakfasted and out of the house by 5.45. The M25 was busy but kept flowing. Confusion reigned as we tried to navigate our way to the long stay car park at Heathrow. Strangely 'Tom' seemed to know they way but we never listen to him! We were relieved to see that check-in was open so we could get rid of our cases straight away.
We approached the desk to be informed that our flight was delayed for 2 and a half hours because of the backlog resulting from the plane crash on Saturday. This meant we would arrive in San Francisco with less than the minimum time required to make our connection to Anchorage. So we were provisionally booked on a later flight just in case. That 19 and a half hours is beginning to look like a stroll in the park! On the plus side, we were given meal vouchers because of the delay. Surprising how scrambled egg and smoked salmon washed down with a good cup of Yorkshire tea makes things look not quite so bad. Now, how can we fill the next 3 hours?
We finally boarded the plane at 1.30pm then proceeded to crawl along to the runway for the next hour. Come on United Airlines, no individual TVs or take-off and landing sweeties on a 10 hour flight?
Needless to say, we missed our scheduled connection and just made it for plan B. we will now arrive in Anchorage at 11.45; I just hope whoever is supposed to be meeting us has kept up to date with the situation. Ahhh, another 5 hour flight.
As we took off, I was surprised to see the wreckage of Saturday's plane crash in plain sight. Not the sort of thing to fill you with confidence as you are taking off.
Our approach to Anchorage was through thick cloud but I was surprised to see how green and lush it was - and it was still light! I expected more snow!
27 hours since we left home, no one was there to meet us at the airport so we grabbed a taxi and finally made it to the Ramada Hotel in downtown Anchorage. Local time is 1.00am, 10.00am at home. The strangest thing of all has been that in all that time, it hasn't got dark! Sunset here is around 11.35am and sunrise around 4.30am.
