We're gutted we didn't plan enough time in Cambodia, so far it's our best country we've visited. Laos was top!!
After eventually getting to Battambang and finding our tuk tuk driver still waiting at the bus depot was unexpected, and it was raining, quite odd seeing as they don't like the rain in general, we'd have thought he may have gone. The place we stayed at was recommended by new friends who'd travelled Cambodia already. It was a good decision. We met Kun the owner who had fruit on hand, a God send as we were starving from missing lunch, and he sorted us a tuk tuk to town for dinner. The lengths people go to, to accommodate you are exceptional. It's nice to not feel like a walking dollar sign.
The reason for Battambang was the bamboo rail way. A-MAZ-ING!
Wizzing along at 25mph and nothing to hold onto. Thankfully we had our sunnies on as we didn't fancy bugs in the eye. We did occasionally have to stop and dismantle the train, wait for trains coming in the opposite direction to pass by, rebuild the train and hop back. Not the usual railway experience.
We were greeted at the end of the line by the local village kids who showed us around, they also got to practice there English and made leaf woven jewellery and grass hopers. Annoyingly they started asking for a dollar for their troubles, we'd have happily given them one anyway, luckily there were only 4 kids as our guides. Ryan helped the driver turn the train around and off we went back to the station.
In the afternoon we went to the 'killing cave' much like the 'killing fields'. Another way the Khmer Rouge killed there own.
Away from the caves there were amazing views of the region and a mountain top temple with monkeys.
On the way back to the city we stopped at the bat cave, no batman and definitely no robin. Still amazing to watch them come out of their cave and out into the fields. Shame it took so bloody long, we know we're on Cambodia time, even the bats are late.
We've had an amazing time here and will definitely be back to explore some more. We've met some great people, hotel owners to tuk tuk drivers to fellow travellers. We also met a 12 yr old girl who was enjoying the new foods in Asia, including trying dog and tarantula, far braver than us! Her dad said he'd put us up in hawaii if were ever in the area. His business card looked legit. Something were actually considering.
Even the travellers are accommodating.
Now we're on our way to Bangkok and onwards to Phuket to experience the deep south.
24 hours of bus-train-bus. If only flying was cheaper.
