Day 4 - Mungerannie Hotel to Birdsville
We left Mungerannie at 7:50 because the Winnebago tour was going to be leaving today, heading north, and they are traveling VERY slowly. It was a cool night and cold morning. The sky is clear but the wind is very cold. There were a lot of kites, and we saw one fly up with something small in its claws. We also saw an eagle.
We stopped at the Mirra Mitta bore - very hot water coming up from the Artesian Bore. The water in the thermos wasn't hot enough for a coffee so we had a protein bar for brekky and kept going.
The road was much the same as yesterday with the ruts and smooth tracks. There were some good bits where you could travel at 80kmh, and there was a really rough, rocky bit.
Most of the time the landscape is gibber stone, with patches that are sandy.
An eagle sat on a sign for us to take lots of photos, and we saw ibis - couldn't believe our eyes. There were patches of water on the side of the road and we went through three water crossings - not very deep and the base was good. I put the car in auto (in case it needed 4WD and Merv laughed at me).
We stopped at Tippipilla Creek Camp site to boil the billy (a gibber stone plane with a loo in the middle). It would be VERY hot as there is no shelter.
Merv got out of the passenger seat and said "We have a problem". My heart sank - I thought there was an issue with the trailer. But it was the very back passenger side window - it was broken. The was up dish with 2 filled hotties was next to the window and must have bounced into it too many times. We don't understand how it could have happened, but it did. We had the boxes we got our groceries in at Peterborough so used one of them to tape it up. Buggar.
Oh well, nothing we can do about it now so had our cuppa and back on the road. About 91km out of Birdsville we saw a dingo walk across the road. We stopped to get some photos and it stopped and looked at us before it walked off.
At 2:20pm we crossed the border to Qld and put our clocks forward half an hour (back to Vic / Qld time). We got into Birdsville about 3pm.
We booked in to the caravan park and went to the bakery for a late lunch. There were no powered sites so have an unpowered site for 2 nights.
We went to the info centre to book a Big Red sunset tour but they are booked out until Friday. We paid $2 for a pass to go out ourselves and decided to have tea at the Birdsville Hotel and go to Big Red tomorrow.
Merv had bangers and mash and I had kangaroo - a beautiful meal.
