Day 7 - Boulia to Mt Isa
Not much to report today. Up at 8:30 and on the road at 10:00. 300km today. The road was sealed all the way but very narrow. When a car came the other way both had to have one wheel off the road. The first 3 cars didn't slow down so after that we got right off the road so they didn't. We got a chip in the windscreen.
These cars were young guys, probably in a hurry to get to Bedourie to start drinking before the weekend's races.
There were about 18 cars all the way with most closer to The Isa.
The country was flat and barren half way, and gibber stone. We stopped at the roadhouse at Dajarra for a coffee and there was a lady from Shepparton working there! The roadhouse looked unfriendly from the outside but was nice inside. She fed the Butcher Birds so we watched them fight over the food.
It got scrubby after that, and undulating in places. We started to see small termite mounds and stopped for a closer look.
It was hilly coming into The Isa and the first thing we saw was a chimney stack. There is a reasonable shopping centre - bigger than Kyabram. We went to the info centre and got an unpowered site at a caravan park. You would have to book if you wanted a powered site.
We had a walk around the shops and had a late lunch - Subway & Macca's - guess who had what. We did some grocery shopping and went back to camp. I fixed the tape on the broken window and covered it with plastic (rubbish bags).
The weather is nice and warm. We are in short sleeves, but still jeans. The nights are cool. It will be about 7 tonight so still have the winter pj's and doona.
We cleaned up and came to the Buff Club for tea. I had pork loin steak ( which was beautiful) and Merv had oven baked barramundi. Merv is trying his luck on the pokies. I will let you know how he goes.
We have a long drive tomorrow to the 3 ways and then about 50km north - about 700km (it doesn't look that far on the map, this really is a big country).

Jo Duncan Wonderful reading Gwen! Great photos! Missed you guys at our social but I'm sure you will find some piece of dirt somewhere in Australia to have a dance. We had a touch of country last night, we went to Andre's Bush Dance. Great night! We learned quite a few new dances probably none of which we will be doing as a warm up in class although dave n vicki reckon one part may be workable! Keep enjoying yourselves and blogging!
