After a terrible night and lack of sleep I couldn't get away fast enough.
Took the new but empty motorway to the World Heritage site of Cuenca with its centre of evocative medieval buildings. Most emblematic are the Casas colgadas, these hanging houses jut out precariously from the cliff side over the river.
I had chosen the next campsite because it was supposed to be quiet. I had never heard of the town, Albarracin, but what a find it is!
Firstly, though, the journey to it was one of the most beautiful I have driven. There were three passes over 1000 metres, one was 1620 metres. The good but empty road took us up the side of a gorge with a grand escarpment the other side. There was a pleasant waterfall with a rock bridge and Sacha was able to swim and cool down. We then descended into a valley and There was a canyon called rainbow canyon and you could understand why with the many colours of the rocks. I really didn't want the journey to end.
However the ancient town of Albarracin is such a surprise.
I had never heard of it yet it is rightly considered one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. It is located on a rock promontory in the bend of a river.
The next day I climbed up the steep streets to the city wall (see photo),castle and cathedral. The old red plastered buildings are remarkably well preserved and have some amazingly ornate door knockers.
The campsite is very pleasant with excellent facilities.
