Woken at 4am with the phone ringing. I had fallen asleep listening to Podcasts and the phone was somewhere in the big comfortable bed but I couldn't find it it was my son but when i picked it up it rang off. I was worried that there was a problem with Sacha my dog. He text me he had dialled it by mistake and that Sacha was happy which was a relief but with the time difference I couldn't sleep.
Fadi is a baker and owns bakeries in Jordan and is setting one up in Washington so I was hoping for something nice for breakfast but was given warmed bread and sliced cheese.
Took taxi to Union Station- another Ethiopian driver who was happy to take a tip.
Left my luggage at the station which cost a whopping $30 (£20) and took the hop on hop off trolley bus around.
The trolley bus made a circuit of most of the sights including the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and Ford's Theatre where Lincoln was assassinated and the boarding house across the road where he died. There were the various Smithsonian museums. I didn't realise that the benefactor was English and hadn't visited America but believed in the ideals.
I hopped off to make a pilgrimage to the National Geographic Museum. Caught the trolley again out north to the embassy area and the gothic National Cathedral. On the way back I saw an Apple shop and jumped off to try and get my IPhone fixed. I hadnt been able to send emails and since someone else looked at it wasn't able to receive either. The first girl was useless and as I went out the door moaning the girl sent me back to someone else who fixed the problem and I had to change the password. Later I found that it affected the kindle and I had to mess around with that also. Anyway, able to send now but all the ones I had waiting have been lost.
Nearly forgot to mention the amazing Washington monument. It as massive.
It now was late to use the trolley to go to Arlington Cemetery but I got there by metro. It was a bit of a rush walking up the hill. There was the eternal flame by Kennedy's grave and other Kennedy's nearby. Then there was a mad dash to see the changing of the guard. Just reached there as it started. Then ran back to catch the metro on to Union Station.
There is an awful lot to see and do on USA's capital.
At the station I was delighted to find that they let senior citizens on first.
Gradually learnt the ropes-Where there was drinking water and how the seat works. Didn't realise until much later that there was a leg rest. Slept as well as could be expected.
