Thursday was a BIG driving day. Left Cradle Mountain after grabbing a coffee at the Cradle Mountain Lodge (the only place in the area with power) we drove all the way down to Strahan on the West Coast for lunch. Had a fish and chip lunch overlooking the harbour avoiding the seagulls who were intent on sharing our lunch and had a chat with a couple of guys on a Sydney - Hobart boat who were returning to Brisbane. Unfortunately, they'd been out of contact with the outside world (having spent the previous few days sailing around the bottom of Tassie) and had just heard about the terrible flooding in Brissie. It sounded like their houses had been affected, but they weren't going to be home for a month or so... horrible. Also rather oddly Strahan had a "Ye Olde English Sweetshop" - bought a couple of flying saucers and a couple of cans of Tizer and Vimto for the ride!
The scenery changed dramatically on the drive, from the scrubby mountains of the Cradle Mountain to the rather quaint village of Strahan to the incredibly barron mining areas, to lakes and complete wilderness! We made a few stops to ensure that sanity was kept - at a pretty little waterfall (didn't see any platypus in the stream despite looking hard!) and at Lake St Clair (the opposite end of the Cradle Mountain National Park) before arriving back late into Hobart. I was keen not to drive at night as we'd seen a horrendous amount of roadkill on the roads and the night time speed limits are 20 or so kilometers less during the day because of the amount of nocturnal wildllife.
