After our surprise at how busy Hobart was, we thought that we'd better have a back-up plan as everywhere else that we wanted to visit was likely to be equally as busy. We eventually managed to find a car to hire which we picked up on Sunday morning and then drove up to Freycinet National Park with a couple of stops along the way, including lunch sitting in a sand dune at 9 mile beach!
Once into the park we hiked up to the Wineglass Bay lookout upon one of the world's most beautiful beaches. This was where we were going to camp! After tramping down the length of the beach (fairly hard work with the gear we were carrying) we set up camp next to a couple who had been walking for 3 days in the park and before that had done the 7 day Overland Trail from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair (luckily we didn't get close enough to smell them...) There were also a number of curious wallabies in the camp and kookaburras laughing at us! We felt pretty inadequate with our super basic "festival" tent compared to most people's full set ups, but surprisingly managed a comfortable night on the hard ground and weren't too hungry after eating the picnic dinner that we'd packed. Wineglass Bay is fully worthy of the hype and spending the night there with so few other people around made it even more special. I felt pretty smug walking out back to the car the next morning!
