Happy New Year everyone. Thanks for all the messages, phone calls and emails over the festive period it was good to hear from you all!
We have been upto alot since our last blog. We travelled upto Sydney from Melbourne on a tour, spent Christmas day and new year here and are now scrambling about with the other 80,000 backpackers looking for work!
The trip up from Melbourne took 3 days and we visited a few National Parks and the Australian Capital Terrority where Canberra is situated. It was ok but for once the weather wasnt too good and it rained 2 out the 3 days and once when we were on a trek 1 hour from anywhere! It was nice to be reminded of Scotland though. The highlight for us both was Canberra where we visited the Parliament and the War memorials. They were both really interesting and gave us a greater insight into Australian History.
We arrived in Sydney and proceeded to have a few too many shandys at a Full Moon Party at King's Cross. So the next day visiting the Harbour and the opera house was a bit of a blur but we have revisited several times and sure will be back again. It is great seeing the bridge and opera house that close as they are both amazing and it is quite an atmosphere down at the Harbour.
Christmas was a bit different this year compared to the normal one. We got up early and although there was no snow or frost the sun had still to rise. There were 4 of us in the two story house we had rented so after opening our presents and having a few bucks fizz we started to cook our turkey, ham, and full christmas lunch. After consuming this and a few beers we all headed down to Bondi beach! The place was mobbed and although the weather wasnt great the temp was still in low 20's. I decided to brave the water and the rest relaxed with a few refreshments on the beach (hidden in McDonald's cups so the police wouldn't arrest us!). After this we headed back to the flat and played some games and chilled out.
Boxing day was another early rise to go and see the Sydney to Hobart Yatch race where about 80 ships set sail from the harbour and race to Tasmania. We got a great viewpoint at Watsons Bay which is the entrance exit to the harbour area. It was pretty amazing seeing all these ships in the sea togeher, the sea foamed and bubbled as all the ships and all the viewing ships were racing along!
New years Eve was the next big event and the place is manic! We knew this was going to be the case and left the flat at 9 am yes i said 9 am and got our spot at a park in a place called balmain. We had a great view of the Bridge although we couldnt see the opera house. We settled in for the day and managed to carry 40 tonnes of food, drink and entertainment with us! It was a good day and very much worth the early rise because by 5pm the place was jam packed. It was worth it because the fireworks were out of this world! I am sure if you have been there you will know what i mean.
Since then we have been doing a bit of touristy things and have more planned in the coming weeks. We are also now looking for a flat and work. Jenni had a trial for a marketing company however she soon found out that working door to door in 30 degrees and only being paid on commission wasn't for her! So the search continues!
The photos of all the things we have done will be on the site soon so enjoy looking at them.
We wish everyone a great 2008 and a successful year!
Take care for now Gillon and Jenni x
