G'day to everyone. hope you are well. hows the weather with you?
We have been busy since we last wrote. we now have a job each and have been moving about sydney like nomads. we initially were staying with jill and bryce (jennis cousin and boyfriend) which was great of them to have us then we moved into a spare room of a scottish guy Jonathon in a place called Balmain - 10 mins from the Opera House by ferry. He is a celtic supporter the poor guy so we have been getting nice debates going. We are moving tomorrow however to bondi for 3 weeks before moving to a place called drummoyne a bit further out - variety is the spice of life and all that. Looking forward to living in bondi as we are only literally 2 mins from the beach which will be good. I will be out running everynight to lose the beer belly that appears to have attached itself to my stomach and jenni is looking forward to running on the beach also!!!!!!
Finding work has been a bit harder to get than we imagined. Jenni went for a job trial with a credit card company which ended up being door to door sales. Much to her credit she managed to stick it out for 3 hours before telling them where to stick it - and not in the ATM. After jenni's dodgy job trial we both now have jobs - designer clothes technicians!!! That is what i like to call it. We are both in the same factory unpacking clothes such as firetrap which have been imported from the UK and retagging them before repacking them and sending them to shops. We are both enjoying it and i am considering a carreer switch!! It is easy work and keeps us of the streets and more to the point spending money. it is also for a two month period which means money guaranteed and we finish just before jenni's mum and dad head over. The best bit about the job though is travelling to it. We have to get a ferry under the harbor bridge then past the opera house before getting the bus. it certainly wakens you up in the morning and gets you to open your eyes and it beats the M8 in the mornings, only just!!!!
We are both keeping busy otherwise. jenni socialises with jill and some other friends she has met and i have joined a rugby team who have just started pre- season. they are called Kings Old Boys (not that i am old mind its just there name) and at the moment its is mainly varietys of tag rugby which is a good laugh every tuesday night. It feels good getting a run about after 4 months of little exercise and is making me hungry again to return to Dalziel even although it may be as a front row!!
We have been also continuing with our tourist activities such as visiting the museum of sydney the contemporary arts museum and the local watering holes. the sydney museum was an eye opener and the guide was interesting!!! He continually referred to the colonists back in 1788 as english even though all the pictures and flags on the model ships were british. Not one to be disgruntled by this clear attack on scottish irish and welsh identidy i felt it my duty to inform him of his mistake. After a 30 minute discussion on the matter and me giving him a history lesson on the history of our nation - oh i can feel my blood boiling again. meanwhile jenni managed to find a large model ship to hide behind. He was very apologetic as to his mistake and promised to bring it up with the museum curators. I am going to go back before we leave and make sure there has been changes made!
Yesterday was australia day and we spent it at the harbor to see the ferry race and the tall ship race before going to darling harbor for yet more fireworks. It is a great idea celebrating your nation and we had a good day. apart of course from another sunburn incident where i wole up this morning with a scarlet v where i had left my shirt open. Jenni was equally amused and sympathetic to my plight (photographic evidence to follow!). Later today we are off to jill and bryces for a few bangers on the barbie and to watch the aussie open tennis final. Needless to say i am wearing a full body suit to protect me from the sun.
Sydney is a great city with plenty to do lots to see and plenty of places to do nothing if you want. It is certainly one of the most diverse cities we have visited and we are enjoying spending time here and living here for a while and we are really getting the feel of the place.
While we are here though things happen at home and our thoughts are often drawn there. Jenni and i have both got friends who have got engaged - congrats you know who you are- and others who have had some babies. Sad news also travels and i was so sorry to hear that alan calder had passed away. i had great repect for alan, from a personal and rugby viewpoint. Before we left he asked about our trip and he wished us all the best. My thoughts are with maggie and family.
Keep in touch everyone and dont be a stranger.
Gillon and Jenni X
