So after a deeps night sleep on our 80% solid beds, we had our ice coffees and banana pancakes on the rooftop with our German buddies and we were all set for our day boat trip. Also just to prove the amount you get for your money out here; this day tour from 8-5 cost us just under a fiver each which included an all you can eat lunch, snorkel hire and a free cocktail! Although it does feel extremely weird how low the currency is when you have to type in two million to withdraw from the ATM.
By half eight we came to the realisation that with the exception of a few Russian families we were the only westerners going on the boat trips. The most suitable description for the whole day would easily be weird and wonderful. After being placed on the back of a thirty seater boat with all Asians in life jackets by 9am and having the hip Vietnamese tour guide blasting Snoop Dog, "Young and wild and free", this was the first of many weird and wonderful moments.
Our first island stop took about an hour and this was the national park in which we could snorkel off of. After a pretty extreme walk down some massive slimy and not so secure rocks, where me and Frank obviously both stacked it at some point, we reached the water where we could snorkel. The water wasn't as clear as previous beaches but we saw some pretty amazing fishes and sea creatures despite this. Some of the colours of the creatures were so memorising and neon. Colours you would think could only be man made. We saw swarms of identical fishes travelling together, see through fishes and even star fishes chilling on the sea bed.
There wasn't much area to snorkel off the coast of this island so after an hour we got an ice coffee and ventured round to the side of the island where there were no tourists and sat on some dry rocks looking out to the peaceful sea. On the down side I hate to report that this ice coffee was a two out of ten or even worse that it has come to the addictivly worrying point that we now rate our ice coffes.
After an hour of tranquility, we were ready to board the weird and wonderful boat once more. The seats had been made into a large table which me, Franks and the Asians all sat around waiting to eat the masses of food laid upon it. This was also the point in my life that I had my first morning glory. I'll expand. The cute Vietnamese lady next to me asked me if I'd ever had a morning glory. This startled me till I realised it was an Asian starter. After asking her if there was meat in it (no pun intended) I tried a bit but a bowl of sweet chilli rice was enough for me.
After lunch another group from the neighbouring boat joined us for the start of an 'authentic' Vietnamese show. This started with a singalong and strip tease from a very unconvincing lady boy, included an awkward Korean being pulled up to the stage to dance to Gangnam style and after being asked where we were from, naturally ended with me and Hawkins having to sing the whole of "Wonderwall" to the boat.
Next was the so called floating bar, which actually turned out to be a local jumping into the sea and handing out free cocktails in what can only be described as a rubber ring! The tour guides commented that a English girls were the loudest and the only people having fun which encouraged us even more to jump from the top floor of the boat into the sea to retrieve our cocktails. Being true Brits we proceeded to jump over the bravest of Vietnamese tourists wearing life jackets and clinging onto their rubber rings for dear life!
Afterwards we were served Saigon beers from the local lady boy as we continued our weird and wonderful boat trip in a less than sober state. As the English chart music blasted from the tiny boat we cruised around the coast and visited the other island. The last island was our favourite with white sand and clearer water than the previous. By this point of the day we had been swimming so much we decided just to chill out on the beach. So we took our beers and chilled out on some bamboo sunbeds taking the beautiful setting in. This was a perfect end to the weird and wonderful day and before the sun set we cruised back to the pier and arrived back to our favourite hostel.
