Currently sat at Kuala Lumpur airport nearing the end of a twelve hour connection wait for our fourteen hour flight home. Despite how tired and poor and how much we just want to get this flight over with, we are both still in high spirits due to how amazing our summer has been. What started as a taxi drive to Gatwick airport six and a half weeks ago has ended here and everything in between has been a once in a life time whirl wind! I don't know where to start or how I can summarise such an adventure but we've enjoyed every single second of it (apart from the Vietnam night bus).
We've somehow managed to visit five different countries, six cities, four Islands, a bay of islets, an ancient town and five beaches. From fourteen hour flights to five minute tuktuks. Four traumatising night buses, a few nauseous boat rides and drunken moped rides. We've cycled, kayaked, trekked and I've even driven a scooter and a long tail boat through the biggest lake in Cambodia.
We've slept in 21 different beds, countless naps and hardly any lay ins. From party boat cabins to home stays and rat infested beach huts with no electricity to twenty bed hostels.
We've ticked off a natural wonder of the world and a man made wonder of the world. Seen the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets, monsoons and temperatures nearer forty degrees!
We mastered the use of chopsticks and crossing the crazy roads of Vietnam. We didn't however manage to learn how to haggle and probably got scammed more times than we realised. We drank and rated at least one ice coffee a day and drunk every brand of Asian beer possible.
We've met some of the best people and some of the weirdest people. Travellers from literally every corner of the earth and some of the most friendly locals from every country. Somehow we've managed to survive and are making it safe and sound, only suffering one eye infection, a false malaria scare and countless hangovers!
But this last blog post wouldn't be complete without mentioning the one component of this trip that had made it the best for me. To my travel buddy, partner in crime, life partner and all time best friend. The locals thought we were sisters or lesbians and the travellers thought we were weirdly in sync and affectionate. Thank you to my Francesca Hawkins for being my other half and for spooning me when ever I was hungover.
To the best summer that has probably taken years off of our lives! Now to try and battle through this jet lag and do my second lot of laundry in seven weeks.....
