Update on the last post, a fight did break out on the plane luckily a feisty Thai air stewardess managed to break it off. Brave woman. Apart from that the journey was fine and once we collected our backpacks we made our way to the taxi rank to get a ride into the city.
We arrived in Bangkok exactly the same day as we had done last year and had forgotten that the 12th of August is actually a public holiday. Most of the workers get the day off and they have a massive celebration because it is the Queens birthday. It does make you realise how respectful and loyal the Thais are towards their country, religion and monarchy. Not to mention lucky, I wouldn't mind a golden jubilee bank holiday every year! A plus side to this is there is hardly any traffic yet this doesn't mean a lot of the dangerous and chaotic streets of BKK. Elaborately decorated framed pictures of the queen line the streets and all the trees are lit up by night making the busy city look so inviting.
We couldn't check in yet and as we were stupid enough to not take food onto an eleven hour uncatered flight we went straight out for some breakfast. We went to Koh San Road which is the famous backpacking strip in Bangkok. Lined with bars, restaurants, market stalls, hostels, shops, tattoo shops, massage parlours and more all on top of each other, Koh San Road is brilliantly busy and I don't think there's any where else like it! We got some breakfast and immediately decided we obviously deserved a Thai massage. The massages on Koh San Road are only 150 BTH for half an hour which is about £3 that is extremely good yet you can get a lot cheaper if you venture out of the tourist areas. The massage was much needed after so much travelling although I wasn't sure half the time whether I was being violated or enjoy it. Either way it felt amazing when I walked out.
Walking out we were scouted immediately by a tuktuk man who wanted to take us to the tourist information centre to buy coach tickets. Unfortunately the Thai people are lovely yet you can't help but think half the time they have the intention to sell you something in the end. Mostly because 90% of the time they are. The tuktuk guy said we could have a return for 20BTH which seems like day light robbery but seeing as we couldn't check in yet and the tuktuks are adrenaline rushingly fun we entertained him and said we would go.
Well you can't knock them for their selling tactics, walking out an hour later with four weeks worth of travel and accommodation sorted, they were good. Although, all really cool and unique accommodation and hotel busses for less than what we planned organising it ourselves.
The rest of the day consisted of going to the rooftop of the Hilton hotel to see the amazing 360 view, a charactacture (picture to follow), a nice nap and beers with an American stoner called Dorian. We also were stuck in one bar for a while whilst having dinner because of a monsoon. We were sat in the outside covered bit with a Thai couple singing acoustic covers and the queens birthdays fireworks display above. This was one of my favourite moments so far.
We didn't go home to late (genuinely before midnight!) and bought some banana and chocolate flavoured pancakes from the street stall which were amazing! We are actually being brave enough to try it this year! We had to catch a coach at 7am so we packed, showered and got into bed. Our first sleep in a bed since Sunday morning, aka heaven.
