After a heartbreaking goodbye to Vietnam, myself and Hawkins made out way in an extremely badly driven taxi to Hanoi airport. We were probably more excited about getting on a plane that excited about the next destination. It's a sad fact that the traumatic night buses had definitely scared us for life!
After a pleasant two and a half hours flight we had arrived in Singapore. We caught the underground to our hostel which was when we realised how different this country was compared to Cambodia and Vietnam! The underground was spacious, air conned and smelled a lot nicer than the tube. The locals were fashion conscious, groomed and all flashing the lastest technology. We had been pre warned about how expensive Singapore would be yet even after a year in London everything was so expensive!
On the subject of London, Singapore is a cleaner, quieter, more tasteful and warmer version of the City. It's similarities included the Singapore eye, China town, an area of skyscrapers owned by banks and big corporations (aka Asia's Canary Wharf) and Little India which could easily be confused with the Whitechaple side of Brick Lane. It was quite surreal being back in a metropolitan city after the last four weeks but comforting at the same time. Especially as their first language is English! Singapore is actually the country where my Mum grew up (no I'm not half Asian, this fact has bought up so many confused faces!) so it was great to be able to see where she lived and nice to be able to relate to her stories of her childhood.
After checking into our hostel we ventured out for some dinner. We found a classy jazz bar which had a live band and an open bar that spilled out onto the street. It was great to see young people out socialising and having fun, a rare sight in Cambodia and Vietnam. My good friend from Uni, Jillian, is from Singapore and it was an absolute pleasure when she turned up to have drinks with us. It was great to have a catch up and here about the country from the point of view of a friend and not a tourist agent! After a lovely evening of jazz music and beers we headed back to the hostel to get a good nights sleep for our tourist adventures the next day.
