The next day was our last day in Ubud and as Gili T island does not have roads it was our last opportunity to hire out a scooter. We had wanted to get mopeds in Vietnam yet the roads were so busy and dangerous even for Asian standards. So today was our last chance and I knew we would regret it. We had met some guy in the hostel who said he would be up for hiring one as well but despite this walking to the hire shop behind my poker face I was so so scared.
So Axel has agreed to take Franks on the back of his first. I remember when I had one in Malia that the hardest part is trying to balance two people. Not to mention my body strength before travelling wasn't great let alone now! The women at the shop bought the scooters around, chucked us our helmets and we were off. Well Frankie and Axel were. After realising which side to turn to accelerate I was right behind them!
Within minutes of driving I absolutely loved it. It was so fun and it was so surreal driving through the Balinese surroundings. We passed rice paddy fields, art warehouses and through the mountains. It was pretty easy once you got going, just keep to the left and watch out for cars over taking.
After about an hour we came to Bali's biggest and most popular rice paddy field which you were able to climb. Five weeks into our trip around SE Asia and me and Hawkins still have no idea how rice paddy fields work. They're green stalks coming out of water, no rice in sight! We've asked loads of other travellers as well who when asked realise they have no idea either. One for google. So after climbing up and down the fields we jumped back on the bikes and headed back to Ubud.
After lunch at the hostel we decided just to have a drive around Ubud as there were only two hours till the sun set and I was brave enough to drive but not in the dark. After our cruise we handed the scooters in and had another delicious and organic meal.
We decided to have one last beer and watch the band again but we were joined by lots of interesting new people from our hostel. What was meant to be one beer slightly increased and many hours later we were making our way to bed. Word of advice to anyone backpacking, always pack the night before. I wish someone had told me this when at eight AM an Indonesian guy was waking us up stating our bus to the port was outside. Oh well, at least the driver found it funny. A rushed pack later and still in last nights clothes, we were on our way out and Ubud had been a great stop but to finish our trip, Gili T.
