Arriving in Byron Bay was awesome.
Before dropping us of we did a lap of the town, felt like I was in a 1800's cowboy film if they got sucked into the 21st centry and cowboys surfed. All of the shopswere surfer shops, gnarley. Passed the beach hotel bar and I immediatly knew I was going to end up there at some point soon, had one of those weird - s***, i'm going to be pretty drunk here visions. Jumped off the Mojo coach which had taken me from the surf camp and realised we were nowhere near the hostel we were staying buy told us we could hop back on and get a lift to the Arts Factory Hostel. On the way they said they were all going to the Beach Hotel that night and that me and Dean should head down. Only spent a few days with the people at surf camp but they were some of the most chilled down to earth people i'd ever met, could have worked there for a while which I would have loved to do but really wanted to continue travelling asap and see more of Australia.
So far after only being in Byron Bay for a matter of minutes but it's a major contender for best place in Aus already.
Got to the Arts Factory and wondered how we were going to find the way back into the center of Byron. As soon as I turned around and saw the place I knew it was going to be slightly different to a log cabin. Surfboards pretty much everywhere, lizards, teepees, guitars, didgerydoos, a pool, hot tub, cinema.. the list goes on. Got into the room and boom, there was another guitar. Don't think anyone staying there wasn't a musician or artist of some form, which was great and everyone turned out to be really interesting.
We only just had time to unpack a bit before it was time to meet the surf instructors and others at the Beach Hotel.
The Beach Hotel is by far the best bar I have ever stepped foot in. More aboridgional instruments strapped to the wall, a massive cinima screen in one part near the bar, Dj in the other part round the next side of the bar in a massive club-like area which opened up onto the outdoor bit where there were tables and chairs. Met a load of people from surf camp and a few saw a few other familier faces - turned out to be an awesome night.
