Been in Australia for almost 9 weeks and thought it would be a good idea to start a blog mainly for families sake but if anyone randomly spots this and picks up some useful tips - i'll try and make them useful, or learns from my mistakes, then it will all be worth it.
I'll start from 9 weeks ago, 9th January 2011.
Arriving in Sydney after over a day of flying was jet lag heaven so I just wanted to get a shower and collapse; had a weird moment of realization on the plane as soon as it landed that i'm on the otherside of the world, on my own - upside down. Felt really weird, mad stuff. Sort of got a grasp of this feeling now and it's awesome, spent the first week constantly s***-scared but it's all about feeling at home wherever which is hard to get used to. Living out of a bag can be challenging but started to prefer it, never been organised. The picture of the kangaroo pretty much sums up my first day.
Spent this first week in Coogee Bay where I met some awesome people, signed up for something called OzIntro at home a month or two before getting here and it was definatily worth it - specially if you're alone! 50+ like-minded dudes in one place was definatly a good idea. Got to do some surfing etc. in first week as well which was cool. Sorry for this being dead brief trying to get everything down - but yeah, OzIntro is worth doing!
After this week I headed to Sydney with a few mates made during OzIntro met a dude called Dean that has similar plans, not that I had much planned at this point - but he wanted to do a surf camp at some point which I was dead keen on doing. Sydney was amazing, stayed at XBase Hostel which was next door to a bar called Scary Canary - had a few mad night here, one included dwarfs wrestling in jelly, :/. Awesome city though Sydney constantly something going on which felt cool to be a part of couldn't imagine getting bored here quickly but i'm more in beachy places, if that makes sense. After a few days here I started my travels, stepping out of Sydney felt crazy as it was officially the start of travelling alone, first week was great with everyone and i've kept in touch with most and going to meet at stages throughout but I don't want to have set plans prefer just seeing what happens. Dean decided he wanted to do the surf camp straight off as it leaves from Sydney so this made sense to me, didn't cost that much either and it saved getting a bus pass for OzExperience or Greyhound just yet as they'd take us to Byron Bay. God damn Byron Bay is cool. Anyway surf camp; such a cool experience with a bunch of really down to earth chilled people, couple were from California, never been to America but definatly want to check out California at some stage after meeting these guys! Going to write a seperate post for the surf camp as it was so damn awesome. Sorry this is brief will try and keep this as up to date as possible but we'll see, easier to add to my diary than an online blog and cheaper! Next post will be about the surf camp and if you get the chance definatly check this out!
To everyone back home, it's going awesome Australia's pretty crazy, getting used to accent, hope all's good living the other way up!
Take care, George
