Me And My Travels
Hi All
Hope you are all well? I am fine thanks and had a really good time on the everest base camp trek. I was supposed to do the Annapurna trek but as there was unrest in Kathmandu and they were firing bullets into Pokhara it was safer for us to do the annapurna trek as we would be in the mountains and hopefully when we got back after 3 weeks it would have calmed down. To start the everest base camp trek we had to fly to Lukla. The plane we went on was a small plane where the one lady on board who was their only cabin crew came around with cotton wool for your ears just in case it was noisy ansd sweets. When my friends were being sick she did not bother about them and was just reading her paper, what a job. On our landing to Lukla as it was a small plane you thought you were heading for the mountains which was an experience in itself. I had a really good group and our guides were the best. The views were spectacular and I loved being surrounded by the mountains. We were lucky as on the way up it started to snow and on the way back down the snow had gone, so we got to see the mountains in the snow and without snow which was a lovely experience. At times we sat down on the snow and slid back down the hill where we had walked up, which was great fun and quicker. I was happy I achieved my goal of trekking to Everest base camp and Kala Patthar which was a 2hr up hill steep climb. Further up you had to climb over rocks which I found difficult as you would have to lift your legs over when they were really tired and plus I had not much energy left. I had to stop half way up ever so often to get my breath back as the altitude was very high, it was (5550) and everest base camp was (5364). It was challenging and made you test yourself and push you to your limits and further which was good, will defintely be going back to do the Annapurna trek which I set out to do in a couple of years. Near enough most of our converstaion on the trek was about food and when we arrived at a tea house, the first thing we would do is order a drink and ask for the menu and see what everyone was having to eat. They say when you go up to higher altitiude you may loose your appeitite but it was the opposite with me I am sure I ate loads more, probably because I was walking everyday and burning it off. The Nepalese main meal is Dhal Bhat which is rice and lentils and vegetables by the side with chillis. The good thing about this you would get a big plate full and could have seconds. The nepalese people would have a big plate full of Dhal Bhat and eat it very quickly and with their fingers which was interesting to watch. I only got a little bit of altitude sickness once on the way back down from everest base camp. I felt disorientated to walk and had a fever as though I was drunk and had to stop ever so often as could walk in a staight line. Pasang one of our guides would keep saying Gemma be careful and are you drunk as I could not walk in a straight line, which was funny as he would keep on saying it. When I got to my tea house my friend lisa who I was sharing a room with got my sleeping bag out as she thought I would be tired which was nice as I was tired and just slipped into my bed. I had to push myself to get up for dinner when all I wanted to do was stay in bed and sleep and have my mum looking after me and wanted my mum's cooking. The next day I was a lot better which was good. When we got back to Kathmandu we all went out for a meal which was nice but I was sad to leave the next day as I had made really good friends and plus I was with them for 3 weeks. On the other hand was looking forward to going to Thailand as it would be a new experience and meeting new people and my cousin as have not seen her since last october 2005.
Take Care
Love Gemma xxxxx
