Destination Calabria! Caught train to Praia a mare, was 40 minutes late - causing us much distress as we thought we'd either missed the stop or were on the wrong train! Were met at the station by 'Papi', Martina's dad who spoke no English, in the smallest car you have ever seen. Not surprisingly our packs did not fit in the boot so it was left open with them hanging out the back! Sitting in the back seat had to hold onto them as we zoomed through the little town to our hostel - On Da Road. Were met by Martina who told us the others are waiting for us at the beach so grabbed our bikinis and towel and off we went. Finally found the Buddha Bar where, upon mentioning we were staying at Martina's, scored free loungers and beach umbrellas. Met the others who were staying there - Adam, Alex and Greg. They were going on a boat trip with 'Papi' so jumped in on that, went out to the island and into two grottos where the water was insanely neon blue it was unreal! Cliff jumping had been muchly anticipated, especially by Sarah so were stoked when 'Papi' pointed to a cliff and told us to jump out of the boat, swim over and jump off it (lucky we had Adam who speaks Italian to translate). Started at the 5m, then 8m then motored around the corner to the 15m...scary! Doing NZ proud, Sarah was the only one who did the one....Adam later commented that he could tell she was the younger sister as she has the reckless abandon needed to throw oneself off a cliff! Back aboard the little boat, putted across the bay to the mainland to the 23m jump - unfortunately they don't let people do it anymore, something to do with the tide but hiked up the top for great views over Praia a mare. There was a fresh water spring on the beach so could dig a hole and drink the water, very strange when the salt water was just meters away. Next stop was another grotto where you had to swim through a tiny hole in the rock to get in - diving off the boat new bikini bottoms failed dive test, shooting down to my ankles...hopefully 'Papi' wasn't watching! Got dropped back at Buddha beach and sooooo hungry! Made the trek into town for dinner with everyone and Alex who'd just arrived, pizza and pasta...how very Italian of us. Grabbed some cheap nasty wine before heading back for pre-drinks before the beach party on tonight. Lots of Italian men, very expensive drinks (€7) - although they did taste like drinking straight spirits through a straw - and the most random music selection, from Grease to techno to R and B. Hilarious! Danced on the beach until 4am, met two guys called Antonio and a writer who didn't speak English - his friend told me he thought I was 'beautiful girl' and he would like to make love with me, then that he normally wrote for girls and they were like 'swoon' but that it wasn't going to work because I don't speak Italian! Skinny dipping and king of the raft on the way home - Adam commented that if he ever directed a XXX movie he would draw inspiration from this!
