Today's activity for team kiwi to dominate: hiring bikes and attempting to navigate Bruges. Step 1: hiring bikes FAIL, could not find hire place, asked lady in shop who spoke 'little English'. Step 2: choice of bike - Aimee and I decide that a tandem bike would be fun. After much deliberation decided Aim would drive and I would navigate. Almost ended up in outdoor restaurant seating! Change of positions necessary. Very wobbly start through cobbled streets of town, people and cars everywhere, streets very narrow. Planned route was to Zebrugge and the beach however somehow ended up on highway - there was a fairly large gap on the side of the road which we assumed was a cycle lane but when people started tooting and pointing to their heads we guessed they were either saying 'you should be wearing a helmet' or 'you're mental' neither of which is good so made swift exit and headed back towards Bruges. Stopped in a nice park by a canal for rest then unknowingly took off in the complete wrong direction. One hour later, after a lovely tour of the Flemish countryside ended up in the exact spot we had ridden past earlier. Epic fail. Were actually almost in town where we were before. Several more navigation issues, circumnavigated Bruges, went the wrong way down a one way street, almost crashed into another cyclist before finally making it back to the Markt (main square). Very sweaty and hot there was much relief at knowing where we were. Had a drink at the bar then rejuvination time before the Murray-Nadal tennis match. Turns out it was happy hour when the game started, €1 beer....sweet! Bartender told us we needed to drink faster, we happily obliged then stocked up on three beers just before happy hour ended. Fantastic idea it turned out until we realised we had to return bikes to the square before 10am. Beer here is considerably stronger than normal beer so after six we were feeling fairly tipsy, suboptimal conditions to be riding a tandem bike through the city in semi darkness and the sudden appearance of rain, thunder and lightning. After many attempts at getting out of small exit of bike park, jandal fell off and whilst I was fetching it Aimee decided that she would have a turn at steering. Crashed into a silver merc and once again changed drivers...several lost jandals later finally got our pedal on and made it to the Markt to return bike. Then proceeded to roam town in search of waffles, unsuccessful so ended up at Pizza Hut of all places with random Canadian we had picked up along the way, Chris. Drenched through, got a table and pizza then headed back to our hostel, St Christophers. Met random guy on way home who asked us if we knew where his hotel was, when we said no he said that's ok I'll just come back to yours! Made speedy exit down the street. Shattered from biking adventure and amazing Belgian beer.
