Gem's birthday - 22nd May 2007 ... brilliant day!
Gem woke us all up saying (or should i say shouting) its my biiiiirthday! (she was very excited haha) whilst she was on the phone outside we put happy birhtday banners on her bed and she opened her presents etc. We then went down the road and hired out 2 mokes. Mokes are basically colourful 4 seater golf buggies that you're allowed to take on the road and they go 80kmph max. There was 8 of us altogether, me, gem, fran, kathryn, vicki, blonde vicki (have you ever tried travelling with 2 vicki;s?! its so confusing) Pippa and dean. Poor dean we're starting to turn him into a girl. anyway we hired out the mokes and went on a road trip. First we went to cedar creek falls which was a mission to get too but it was beautiful. Driving in the moke was so funny, theres no top to it so our hair went everywhere. We then went to Lake Prosperine.... this was a serious mission it was in the middle of nowhere and we drove down all these country roads not passing another car. When we got to the lake there was no-one around (and im convinced there was crocodiles in it - we didn't get in don't worry) we all lay on the ground and sunbathed. Blonde vicki went into the loo and there was a green tree frog under the toilet seat that she only discovered once she'd done her business. i'm sure you probably all heard the screams in england, the rest of us found it very very funny! We then got back in the mokes and drove to Shute Harbour were you could look out over the Whitsunday islands. it was a really good view. and then it was back to drop the mokes off and start to get ready for the night ahead.
We got take out pizza since it was gems birthday and sat in a circle on the dorm floor eating it. A few of us then sneaked out and got gems cake, lit the candles and came back in the room singing. Gem blew the candles out..... we then realised there was smoke everywhere (from the candles) and we were stood under the smoke alarm. have you ever seen 10 or so people jumping up and down waving towels in the air wafting smoke away before? SUCH a funny sight! i had hold of the cake so i just stood and watched :D
That night we all went dressed as pirates. we all looked awesome and did lots of dancing and lots of DJ's said happy birthday to gem and her pirate crew over the speaker things.
We spent until Thursday in Airlie Beach. It was very much a backpacker town and full of good bars so we've really had a party week. There was a lagoon there which we spent our days swimming in and sunbathing next too. me and gem also found a bead shop and we managed to spend hours in there making bracelets that place is addictive. On wednesday me gem and kat got up at 4.30am to watch the champions league final in a dorm down the corridor. lets just say i couldn't help cheering and not too many people agreed with me.... we won't say anymore about that!!
On Friday we got up early and got the 09.05 greyhound bus to Townsville. There was 7 of altogether, we travelled with suze, maria and leanne (3 geordies that we met on fraser island) We named our bus driver militant mary, she was truly a nightmare. it was like being back in school but worse. She gave us a lecture about taking shoes off, bringing milk products onto her coach, using perfume based products, how to use the toilet, having ur arm sticking out into the aisle .... you name it, we got a lecture on it! we all took the piss out of her it was an amusing bus ride. Once at Townsville we got the ferry straight over to Magnetic Island and caught the bus to Base Backpackers. The bus was so full we had to sit with our backpacks on our knees (if you'd seen you would have laughed) This hostel is awesome, we're staying in little wooden huts right on the beach and as you're going to sleep you can hear the sea. We met up with Dean here who is going to travel with us from now on making our group up to 5, well 8 for the time being as suze, maria and leanne are staying with us for a bit. The bar here is crazy, the manager is nuts. last night he gave everyone a free glass of champagne, and a free shot of jaigermester (yuck yuck yuck ... but it was free) Last night there was a dance competition, i managed to get through to the final and then somehow managed to win it (don't even ask how i laughed all the way through it and some people were taking it very serious) anyway we now a $50 dollar bar tab for tonight! The days here are mainly just spent chilling on the beach or by the pool, its seriously like a paradise island. tomorrow we're moving to the other side of the island to stay in a hostel which is joined to a koala sanctuary!
Gem will update soon, hope you're all ok back home
Lots of love from us x x x x
