Well finally on the south Island. The ferry accross was quite fun. 3 Hours but relatively smooth.
The next stop was Nelson which pretty much is a 2 street town - and follows the trend of being a ghost town after 9pm!
Due to the bus scheduling I had to stay here 2 days. The first night was pretty fun - exploring the great choice of bars (3 in total) playing pool and then fussball in our hostel. The hostel itself was great. Free movies, free popcorn, free fussball, free ping pong, free board games. Ended up signing "under the bridge" with a dutch girl signing and playing piano and a english guy playing guitar. What fun!! The first was spent walking in the national Park Abel Tasman with 2 superfit switz and a very militant english girl.
We caught a water taxi to the middle of the park and then took the legendary coastal trek back to town. It was a 20km walk which takes about 6hours flat out walking. I was really pretty and would have been great only it rained CONSTANTLY for 6 hours straight. After 10 mins I was soaked through. After 15 mins my waterproof walking boots proved they really are waterproof except for the top (so I was walking with 2 boots full of water). After 30 mins I realise my back pack is not waterproof and that there is about 3 inches of water int he bottom of it. Great news for the ipod, camera and memory cards I had in it. (Fortunately everything survived - well except for my green apple mentos and my tic tacs).
But apart from that was pretty good (Check out the pics to see how wet I was)
In fact we finished the walk in 5.30hours which was pretty good going - however for some reason my hips were killing me (and later my knees). After this grueling walk we hit the pool bar again but it seemed everyone was pretty shattered so we went back to the hostel and found some new peeps off the bus behind us. Some old faces from the north island some new!. We all settled in and watched "Into the wild" such a good film for backpackers traveling the world.
The next day was pretty much a blowout day. I used the valuable time off to get some new back packs as mine were pretty rubish (And waterproof trousers!) That evening me and my new swiz friend cooked dinner. Bratwurst, sauerkraut, sweetcorn and rice. Hmmmmmmm!
Next stop - Greymouth!
