Picking up where I left off - last night in Rotoro met up with some of the group I went black water rafting and we jumped into the thermal hotpool the Hostel had in the back garden. It was a pretty big pool and there were 6 in our group and a bunch of kiwis from Aukland and Hamilton so at 8pm we kicked off an impromptu pool party theat extended to about 2am with random people stripping off and jumping in. Was great - ONLY IN NEW ZEALAND! Can tell you after 6 hours in a hot tub my hands were pretty wrinkly!
Actually the alcohol ran out pretty early - my new german friend had supplied whisky and that was supplemented by canadian club and dry brought in by the wierdest group. 2 Skin head tattooed Kiwi guys on drugs with their 2 foster children and a pyscho women. Apparently they were in Rotoro for graffiti art championships and skate boarding. Very wierd having a 12 year old kid as if I want some whisky!
I ended up pretty sober and rolled off to bed - able to rise and shine for 8am the next morning to catch the bus out of town. German guy was pretty hung over and the rest of the crew pretty craggy!
Today we visited Haka falls - off the longest river in New zealand and Wai-to-pai thermal reservation. (the craziest place - lots of bubbling mud pools and crazy coloured rocks!)
Then after we rolled into Taupo. It was after today I realised how much I love this place. Me and 3 of the crew decided to get out onto the lake for a spot of trout fishing. We rolled up to the boat harbout and hired a boat (Stratus) with a skipper (Harvey) and went into the lake. Infact we were trolling NOT fishing but in 2 hours wer had each caught a trout and me twice. Of one of the ones I landed was the largest and Melvins (Dutch dude) was next.
We gutted the fish - bagged them and back on shore took them to a restuarant called "Jolly good fellows" that the skipper recomended as a great place that could cook them up for us.
An hour later we were enjoying our catch seasoned with worcestor sauce, brown suger, lemon and a cream and caper sauce!
Headed back to the hostel now and just digesting over a cool beer and catching up with the rest of the crew who tried out sky diving.
Such a nice experience - after just 2 days its like having a family abroad from england, germany, brazil, netherlands, belgium and even hungry!
ONLY in new zealand. Its going to be hard to leave this place - fortunately I have still 3 more weeks.
Heading on south tomorrow arriving in wellington!
