Hi everyone
We got to Townsville 2 days ago on the train from Cairns. The train was fantastic - it had free showers on it! Townsville is a quiet, sleepy little town. We camped near the esplanade and had dinner on the sea front. The next day we caught the ferry to Magnetic Island where we went to see the old WW2 fortifications erected there and then on to the pretty, quiet bays and inlets around one side of the island. The beaches are absolutely deserted, mostly because they are dangerous. You can't swim anywhere without first being encased in lead. Personally, I think it's all a myth, the most dangerous things I've seen here are drunk British tourists.
Our campground on Magnetic island was fantastic. We camped under a tree full of red tailed black cockatoos which threw things at us. The Rainbow Lorikeets are pretty much tame and were all over the campground - mostly arm wrestling for water out of a hose pipe. I got up in the night and 2 possums ran away from our tent. I don't know what they were planning!
Back in Townsville, we are just stocking up on some supplies before heading off to Airlie beach on the Greyhound.
More updates soon!
