Hi everyone,
We first arrived in Cairns the day before yesterday and were amazed by the tropical rainforests, hills and the Pacific Ocean - so far we've hiked through mangroves, rainforests and along the waterfront spotting such local wildlife as Australian Pelicans, Buff Breasted Kingfishers and Richard Blackburn (he looks a bit like Richard, we thought - ah).
Anyway, it has been alternatley swelteringly hot, and tropically rainy since we arrived. Our hike out along a rainforest trail today threatened to become a swim halfway out. At least we were up out of crocodile territory (and into the Cassowary's).
We booked our train tickets to Townsville as well today, and the ticket clerk added to our list of Australian men who just can't wait to tell you a story. Just getting a ticket involved a half hour discussion about the rivalry between Cairns and Townsville, an introducion to the scenery we should expect to see along the way and a short tour of platform number one (the train will arrive here, and you can get along just over there...) They have two trains a week here, so it must be more of a novelty!
So - tomorrow we will be hiring a car from "Cairns Older Cars Rental" - $25 AUD for a day, can't go wrong. I've never actually heard of a "Ford Laser" but I'm sure it will be fine.
Speak to you soon!

Lilian Hope the Ford Laser is OK. Apparently is is a rival for the Toyota Corolla! Can't go wrong really! Keep sending the photos xx
