Hi again and happy New Year!
Since our last blog update in Sydney we have definately been "on the move"!
We had a very relaxing time in Sydney and the 900km drive to Melbourne went easier than we thought. In Melbourne we had a very nice reception with one of Eiriks father's collegues, Burt Alesich, who lives with his family in Blackburne (east Melbourne). We were so lucky as to park our campervan outside their house and had several dinners with them. Burt and his family were very hospitable towards us and we are grateful for how they recieved us.
On Saturday we went sightseeing in Melbourne and met up with Ole's old flatmate from Perth, Alexander Fjeld.Alex showed us the Melbourne nightlife and gave us a "Norwegian in Melbourne"-view of things. All-in-all Melbourne was a very exciting and nice city with it's small alleys filled with cafees and all the culture and concerts going on. We spent Sunday as well in Melbourne before we started our long trip out west on Monday morning (29/12 2008). We drove down to the southern tip of the australian state of Victoria to experience "The Great Ocean Drive". Unfortunately, there was a few other punters around who also thought that was a good idea.So we ended up on a winding and spectacular road IN A QUE!So we found a little dirt-road that brought us a little inwards and got past it eventually. The night was spent in picturesque firhermans town of Port Fairy.
The next day we had the whole day in the car. NOT very exciting. We did, however, get to zoom through Adelaide and spend 45min there while eating our lunch in a park behind the University of Adelaide. After that it was back on the highway again. We ended up in a small town in the middle of the Eyre Peninsula called Wundabilla. This area is a huge grain-growing district and the land was mostly flat and filled with gainfields as far as the eye could see. We totalled the day with a good 1191 km done in 15 hours.Woof!
The next day was the start of the great Nullarbor Palin, a plain stretching on the coast of the Great Australian Bight between South Australia and Western Australia. The plain is full of...well...nothing, really..Just flat everywhere and small blueish bushes. We drove "only" 715km this day and enjoyed ourselves among truckdrivers and waitresses on a roadhouse in Border Village between SA and WA. Not a big fireworks display, but people were very friendly and we had a good time.
New Years Day was another driving day. 919km to Kalgoorlie-Boulder where we had a good jaw-dropping look at "The Superpit"; the worlds largest human made hole in the ground. Later in the evening we had a short look at "Kal's" w****houses and bartending personell, aka "skimpy's" (due to the fact that they only wear underwear while bartending). It surley was a town made for and by the roughneck miners.
Our original plan was to continue down south to Esperance, Albany and Margret River before coming to Perth, but we were definately FED UP with driving, so we took the last 600km straight to Perth yesterday with a little stop at "Wave Rock".
Seeing the Indian Ocean before us sure was a sight for soar eyes! 2700km from Adelaide (London-Moscow) or 4400km from Sydney(Ireland-Siberia).We camped at Leighton beach and went straight for the water:-)
Now we're staying put until our first flight in 4 months (Honiara, 10 300km away) will take us back (all that driving for nothing!) to Auckland for som real adrinalin-packed action!
After 4 nights in Kiwi-land its off to Tokyo and an expensive 4 nights before we fly back to Norway and again will return to the solid state of popsickles!
(We forgot our camera this time, but we will upload pictures during the day today).
Best Regards from your two favourite beach bums
Ole Gudbrann and Eirik :-)
