Merry Christmas!
After our last blog update in Brisbane a lot has ahppened.
We spent a raving night out in Surfers Paradise clubbing 'till we dropped followed by a drive down to Byron Bay where we experienced the extreme opposite:A quiet night at the beach just relaxing and talking with other backpackers and locals.
We the decided to not follow the touristy route along the 800km coast down Sydney, but got our little campervan pointing westward:to the Outback of New South Wales. We travelled through and spent the night in towns such as Texas, Walgett and Giriliambone. Our most westernmost stop was Bourke where there was no more paved roads furter west. The landscape was greener than we expected and the countryside offered a wide range of views from rolling hills with grazing cattle to flat and red bushland with sunburned grainfields. We were confident that the amount of grainfields and cattleland we saw from our van equalled at least half of Norway's agreigulture production in comparison(!).
The little town of Giriliambone was especially enchanting. The total population was about 30 individuals and the town itself contained a petrol/diesel pump, a convieniance store and a pub. We tried out the pub, or RSL club, and we quickly found out that the myth of the great aussie outback hospitality was alive and cicking in this town!We were bought beers and everybody in the bar wanted to ask us about Norway and where we'd been on our trip. The next morning, one of the locals came around with live freshwater crayfish and a home-made sauce for us to have for lunch!
We then went on to spend a couple of nights in a backpacker in Hunter Valley, a wine district renowned for its Semillion Blanc. There we went on wine tasting tour and later in the evening;Wine drinking activities:-)
Now we're in Sydney. We've ofcourse seen the harboure bridge and the opera house and we're staying with a good friend of Ole Gudbrann form Sondre Land;Kjersti Dreier, who works and lives here with her boyfriend from Hull, England;Steve.
Now we've celebrated Christmas properly with a trip to the Norwegioan Seamans Church in Manly and a cracking-good pork-belly dinner last night. We even got a proper australian pine christmas tree(!).
Now it's Christmas Day and we're off to celebrate a little bit of aussie christmas; namely the allmighty Barbeque. Shrimps will be served!
Next stop is Melbourne tomorrow. A 900km drive in one day. That's how the cookie crumbles!
Merry Christmas Everyone!
