We had a nice evening in Nelspruit at the backpackers, enjoying a braai and then chatting to Lorna, owner of the hostel. Had a decent sleep and then a relaxing morning waiting for the Baz Bus to turn up around 11.30am or so. Was nice just to chill out and not be rushed. Some of the group that had been with us in Kruger returned from their time in the park and to my disappointment, they told us they got to see cheetahs the afternoon we left. Urghhh.... I would have preferred not to have known. They also saw wild dogs again so they were lucky. Oh well, at least we had our 3 leopards.
Baz Bus showed up and on it were Jenna & Andy. They had tried to get a room at the Funky Monkeys but due to this big group of French school kids they had no luck. We were again staying at the same hostel in Johannesburg, so off we headed. There was only the 4 of us on the bus so we got in much earlier than expected so had another relaxing afternoon & evening in the lounge although frustrating trying to use the internet as it was rather slow.
Yesterday, we shared a taxi to the Apartheid Museum. Mum and I had thought about doing a tour which included the Museum & Soweto in one day but decided we didn't want to be rushed through the museum which was a good idea. When you buy your ticket into the museum, on the back of the ticket it tells you if you are 'white' or 'non white' and that dictates which entrance you must take. This is to give you an idea of what apartheid had been like. Well, for the next 3.5hrs we did nothing but read and watch videos of how segregation started and how it slowly became apartheid. It explained the violent clashes of the 1980's and then how it all came to an end. There was so much information, sometimes it was hard to take in but well worth the time. Glad we didn't have to rush through, knowing we had to move on somewhere else.
We then got a taxi to a shopping centre near the hostel. After getting something to eat, mum and I spent most of the time in the internet cafe where I managed to upload most of the photos I wanted of Kruger. You should check them out. We met up again and got a taxi back to the hostel and got ready to head out for dinner with Jenna & Andy. A nice storm rolled in and as the taxi took us to Melville, lightning and thunder were all around. Good night to go out as the hostel hadn't any electricity when we arrived back from the shops and still didn't have it when we left for dinner.
Had a lovely dinner and chatted away before getting a taxi back. It is interesting how quickly things change from being in a nice area to what looks like a rather rough area. Good idea to hide your purse or wallet so it isn't visible to anyone outside the car. This morning we did a last load of laundry so we had all clean clothes to take with us to Mauritius. We ended up buying an extra bag for all our souvenirs and luckily enough, we are able to store them here so we won't have to pay excess baggage. We've wrapped up all the breakables in bubble wrap and labeled them all, to help when we go through customs back in Australia.
Now we're off to Mauritius. Relaxation, here we come!!
