We finally made it to Durban and boy is there a storm swirling around outside tonight. Glad we have returned the hire car and don't need to worry about any damage to it!!
We haven't done much the past two days except drive. We left Addo yesterday morning and headed to a town called Mthatha. It was about the half way point and it also has the Nelson Mandela Museum. It was grey, miserable and rainy most of the way. We went up and down hills (the car didn't like going up hills) and through clouds which were rather low hanging. We hugged the coast for a while but couldn't get to the beach to take any photos as any spots where it was accessible, there were private resorts. This area is called the Wild Coast and with the rainy weather, it is easy to see why.
Glad to make it to our accommodation for the night. We unloaded the car and then headed to the shopping centre to have dinner and buy some groceries. Curled up in bed early and I think I was asleep by about 10pm. All this driving has worn me out.
This morning we headed into town and were at the door of the museum for the 9am opening. It was really interesting, quite a bit of information about his life from when he was a child right through to now. It was free entry and there were lots of school groups coming through which was good to see and we were also able to watch and listen when they would break out into song.
Once we left there, it was back on the road heading for Durban. The sun was out shining today and very different to yesterday. Again, lots of different scenery - from barren, dusty hills, to lush forests, to the coast again. Had to drive through some towns where there was traffic everywhere and even on the N2 (the main highway), I had to watch for cows, goats, sheep, donkeys, horses, kids walking home from school and the police. The police like to hang out at the bottom of hills and get you for speeding as you come down some of these roads. Most cars were good at flashing their lights at you though if the police were there.
We arrived into Durban and got thoroughly lost. We were hoping to get to the backpackers to unload the car but it wasn't going to happen. Eventually found Budget to return the car, 15mins before they closed. They called a taxi for us and we carted all our gear here. Only here for one night so we won't get to see Durban but off tomorrow to a bush camp near St Lucia for 3 nights. We've booked a package which includes a game drive, boat cruise down the estuary and a few other things. Hopefully should be good. After that to Swaziland and then to Kruger so not sure how internet is going to be over the next week or so. We're on the Baz Bus from tomorrow which is a backpacker bus that picks you up and drops you off at hostels in South Africa. No more driving but will miss the freedom of the car.
