So after all our planning and running around and chasing of travel agents, we finally headed to the airport to begin our African adventure. We checked in and then headed to the Qantas lounge to relax before our long trip. It was a 14hr journey but being in Premium Economy made it a little easier to handle plus I also had the seat next to me empty which was an added bonus. Mum handled the flight fine, but of course always made sure her seatbelt was done up tight.
I managed to grab a couple of hours sleep and we watched movies, played games and more movies to pass the time. Had a few drinks, good meals and before we knew it, we were getting ready to land in Johannesburg. Through passport control to collect our baggage and I must say in all my travels, I've never known a slower baggage carousel. However, once our bags finally made it, out we went. We were met by a 'Meet & Greet' escort who showed us out to the courtesy bus which would take us to the hotel. We were staying at a hotel which is linked with about 3 others, along with a casino, lots of restaurants and some shops.
After checking in, we headed to the casino to stretch our legs and decide whether we were hungry or not. Mum is still coming to terms with the exchange rate and couldn't believe that a burger could cost $41. She then remembers she needs to divide it by 6 to get the correct exchange rate. We decided we weren't that hungry so headed back for an early night. I think we were asleep by about 8.30pm. Not such a good idea because at 2am we were both wide awake. After some adventures trying to find the light switch for the bathroom - who decided it was a good idea to put the switch next to the entry door and not the bathroom door - we dozed off again to about 4am but that was about it. We turned the light on and did some reading till time to get up.
We went down to the restaurant for a lovely buffet breakfast. When we were ready to leave we couldn't remember which way we came, this complex has a labyrinth of hallways and doors. I opened one door and quickly closed it again. It was a conference hall and in it the people were wandering around looking at coffins and hearses and other funeral supplies. When we arrived yesterday mum said it was a bit of a worry that a van with 'Funeral Supplies' was parked in the car park, but now we know why. We then checked out and headed back to the airport for our flight to Nairobi for the real part of the trip to begin!!
