Frey Kat Danielle's SEA Travels
Our journey to Pai (the Byron Bay of Northern Thailand, - the beach + a murky river!) began on an infamous "fan bus" which was packed to the brim with us, a lovely German girl 'Julia', local Thai's, hill tribe women and two intriguing Americans. Needless to say it was a cramped (Katrina and Danielle had trouble fitting their legs in the allocated 'Thai' seats!) and hot journey into Pai!
After a chai tea in Pai we made our way to the Wahline Guest House. We spent most of our 3 days in Pai zooming around on our funky rented scooters (And yes, Freya and Danielle learned how to ride scooters!). We visited great waterfalls, canyons (a shallow gulley with some scrubs, very impressive!) and yet another beautiful temple on another hill (with 1 million steps Danielle decided to walk. Ps there was a road which the rest of us used to drive to the top!).
In our quieter moments (of which there were many) numerous pages were read, zzzz's caught in the hammocks and baths taken in the peddle bath on the patio which was perfect for star gazing (Katrina made this a vital part of her evening ritual!).
Deciding to move our card game to the funky bar down the road was a bad idea because Chang beers quickly became involved! We attracted a random crew (Americans, Danish and German) that broadened our game repertoire and allowed us to crown Katrina queen 's***head'! A few Chang beers later we found ourselves wondering through the back streets of Pai to a bar called the 'Buffalo Exchange'. After yet a few more beers, a Thai wedding proposal for Danielle and mock kickboxing fight (of which Danielle won!) we found ourselves indulging in a chocolate, peanut and sweetened condensed milk 'roti' (Aka the kebab of Thailand). Yum!
The next morning we crawled out of bed "ready and fresh" for our elephant ride! Julia, our German friend joined us on two elephants. We meandered through the forest and rice fields soaking in the beautiful views of Pai and then we made it to the river.....the elephants walked with their bellies in the water until we reached the "cowboy arena" where all the fun began! The aim of the game was to hold on to the ears of the elephant, squeal as loud as you can whilst trying not to fall into the muddy river (and squeal some more!) The star cowboy of the show was Katrina who only got thrown of once, while Freya and Danielle spent most of their time being washes down the river and climbing back onto their elephant.
Saying goodbye to our favorite place in Thailand (to date) was hard, but was quickly blown away as we sped (to literally for Danielle's peace of mind!) up, down and around the beautiful hills back into Chiang Mai.
