I hiked up to Rano Kau Crater in the south of the island. It's 400 m high, and the way there took significantly longer than I had antipated (it was about 1 hour, while I had though I'll soon be there after 15 min). In the middle of nowhere I met three dogs that blocked my path, which made me a bit nervous, since I was walking alone. Fortunately they were friendly and easy to bribe with a few potatoe chips.
Not the highest point of the island, but likely one with the best views, as the crater rises immediately out of the water, right north of the birdman isles. It has a diameter of over 1.5 km and a depth of 200 m. The crater inside is filled by a swamp, and has some endemic vegetation, little of which is left on the island. While there are clouds covering the top of the crater, I can see the open sea through a "window" in the crater wall. Amazing view.
Back down on the seaside I climb into Ana Kai Tangata Cave, which is a cave that opens to a rocky coast facing westward. I sit on the stones and enjoy the sunset behind the wild and high pacific ocean waves and the tide climbing up towards me. Very dramatic scence, extremely cool, but I still decide to leave before drowning. Managed to shoot a cool video of the waves :-)
Before descansar (going to bed), I stop by in the Kaimana Inn (owned by Marcelo as well), where I have a brilliant meal with Tuna Steak grilled in a Ginger sauce with a side of Yuca fries. Yummmmy!!!
