After an early morning lecture we were able to take a very informative bus tour around the city of Accra where we were able to visit Nkrumah Mausoleum. Nkrumah was the first President of Ghana and is highly regarded by the people of Ghana.
We visited the Arts Centre, the Main Post office, Tema station where there were tons of Tro tro's (a van that works as a taxi, but carries several people) we visted indepence square which is where Ghanaians celebrate their indepence on March 6, 1957. Every March 6 Ghanaians come to independence square and celebrate with a HUGE festival. They also go out on the beach and have a great time. We visited this beach and square. However were only able to take photo's opposite the direction of the Osu Castle. Osu castle is where the President of Ghana would go to work and with his passing out of respect the area is under high security.
While touring the city we were able to experience a funeral procession where the streets were blocked with people wearing beautiful red & black clothing and singing and chanting with signs regarding the deceased loved one. It reminded me of what we would when someone was wrongly killed in the US, and the people take to the streets in protest and mourning much like what we recently experienced with the Trayvon Martin killing. (without the violent protest)
