Well, after I left Airlie Beach (my diving location- which I loved) I made my way down to Rockhampton to live on a farm for 3 days, 2 nights. I was told that it was great fun and you could do as much or as little as you like.
BUT, this is me and things didnt get off to a great start. As most of you know im not very good with my numbers so got the dates mixed up and found myself dropped off at the bus station at rockhampton at 2am- my tour had arranged to pick me up from the backpackers hostel at 6am: which would give me 4 hours sleep. But obviously it was never going to be that easy!!
The hostel told me that because it was 'after hours' they would leave my hostel key at the petrol station, but when I arrived they couldnt find it. But after about an hour of me pestering them to look for key- they eventually found it! But then they couldnt find the taxi number. I basically managedto get to bed about 4am. I set my alarm for 5.45am but I DIDNT HEAR IT!!
I woke up at 7am and realised what had happened but I guess in a way it was a good thing. I would have been too tired anyway to have a good time. Myella (the farm I was staying at) were really nice about it and actually teased me about it for the entire visit. There was not much in Rockhampton to do but its nice just walking about it. Its quite an outback kind of place- reminded me of Alice Springs!
hen I arrived at Myella I was given breakfast and then whisked off to milk the cows. Apparently im a natural but its surprising how difficult it is. I then collected the eggs from the chicken cage- which was amusing as one of them decided to go to the toilet on me!
I then had lunch with the four other guests that were living there to and then went to feed the baby kangaroo and Wallaby. You are given a little pounch that you put over your head and then they jump inside and lie on their backs with their legs in the air while you feed them their bottle. They then fall asleep!! These things dont usually interest me but ive never seen anything sweeter! The baby kangaroo and Wallaby were found abandoned so myella take them in and then put them back into the wild but they all stay quite close to the outskirts of the farm- you can see them everywhere. There was one kangaroo that was about 6"0 tall- frightening stuff!
Had steaks and potatoes for dinner and then chocolate cake for dessert!
The next morning its an early start as we have to round up the cows on horse back and the round up the horses by using their motorbikes. It was very amausing. The horseriding I did as a kid came flying back and I felt very comfortable. I was even trotting and jumping over logs (ok, so they were small logs but it was still good). I didnt even know what a clutch was until I got to myella- so I learnt aot but was still not very good!
We drove a 4x4 around the farm feeding horses their hay from the back- try and imagine 45 hungry horses galloping at you and biting at the hay but accidentally biting your ankles. I really loved my stay at myella and was permanately found on a horse- in totel I spent 9 hours on a horse in 2 days!
Also learnt how to lasso a cow which I did on horse back and how to crack a whip!
So I sadly left myella and headed towards Hervey Bay!
