So, I found myself in Hervey Bay (the gateway to fraser island) and I had done it again. My bus arrived at 6.50am and my tour started at 7am. I was exhausted after spending 7 hours on the bus fromn rockhampton!
But I had made it and that was the main thing! I found myself in a room woth about 50 people that were also doing the '4x4 self drive safari around Fraser Island' trip. We were shown 2 or 3 videos explaining how to drive 4x4 cars and safety information about tides, dingos, sand dunes, rubbish etc. It very strict on fraser island as its the worlds biggest sand island. I was out into a group with three 19 year old english guys, two 19 year old english girls and some german girls. Everyone was younger than me and unfortunately only one girl could drive because she is 21 years old. I guess the company just assumed that I could- but I cant!
We got our camping gear and were sent to the shopping centre to buy food for our whole trop as its hard to find food on the island. Once we had done that we made our way to the ferry. It took an hour and we were all really excited. Everyonme said that fraser Island is better than the Whitsundays so I excited because I really enjoyed whitsundays sailing- but then it all went wrong!!!!
It rained and rained and rained. Then we got a flat tyre and had to stand on the beach in the pouring rain attempting to flag someone down that had a spanner, eventually someone helped us out.
Then, our battery died and we spent hours in the pouring rain flagging cars down asking for jump leads. Eventually we found someone to go the police station and make them call a mechanic (there is no phone reception on fraser island so we were stuck) The mechanic arrived and we were off again, oh, I forgot to mention- we had no lights (thry were broken) our handbrake didnt work and the girl that was driving was abit too cautious and we risked getting stuck in the mud because of the slow driving!
We waited 2 1/2 hours one night for pasta to cook (again in the rain) it never did so we had mince on stale bread- yum!
Everything went wrong for our group and to be honest I was happy to leave. It is beautiful- Lake Mckenzie was beautiful and Lake Wabby but everything else seemed over rated- pretty gutted but Ive just arrived in Brisbane after another night spent on the bus- yawn!
