Kelbra
Fantastic reception!
We left Quedlinburg at around 10am and cycled to the base of the Harz Mountains. The climb to the top took the best part of two hours: this is when the hours and hours of hill training 'delivered'. There followed about an hour of ups and downs, through small towns and ski centres, before the exhilarating decent into the historic town of Stolberg. Our arrival into Kelbra was due at 1730hrs. In the event we were six minutes late (due to a strong headwind).
There to meet us was a lovely crowd of locals. They were holding aloft a big welcoming banner made by the kids in the combined local infants and junior school. It was a very Lovely moment for us. The Bürgermeister of Kelbra, Lothar Bornkessel, was there. He presented us with a silver Kelbra coin each. In return, we gave him the Paul's Place teddy bear that we had carried with us. Also there was also the Chair of their twinning association, Kerstin Külper-Sievers. In addition, there was there as was a local newspaper reporter and a host of other 'Kelbronians'. Amazing reception.
They were a lovely group of people and, over a beer or three, they made us feel so welcome. We conveyed to them the warm regards of the inhabitants of Frampton Cotterell/Coalpit Heath. They lamented the fact that the Frampton Cotterell twinning association had disbanded and hoped that some other locals would, one day, restart the initiative.
The Kelbra people were intrigued by the concept of undertaking a challenge in order to raise money for a charity. This is something that the German people don't do. We explained that, in the UK, this type of thing is very common.
Tomorrow, Thursday, they have things planned for us! A car will pick us up, from our hotel, in the morning. And another one will pick us up, from the same place, at 2pm.
Friday we will leave.
There's still time to sponsor us!
