93 cold and wet and windy miles east.
Arrived at Oldenburg.
Four days to get to Kelbra.
Tough going.
This was one of those days for staying in bed. Looking out of the hotel window it was grey, rainy and cold. Whereas my app said fine and dry. Neither of us wanted to leave the warmth of our beds. But we had to because Kelbra was still a long way east.
We donned our rain gear and headed east. We hoped to make Bremen. Unfortunately we didn't because it was just too far.
The cold strong northerly wind didn't let up all day.
We took the wrong turn twice and both times it resulted in us stumbling upon something interesting:
The first time we missed a right turn, early in the day, near the German border, and shortly after that we took refuge under a tree to shelter from a particularly heavy downpour. We then spied some pointed tents, through the trees, in a clearing. We investigated. There were about 40 tents and hundreds of people wearing garb from the Middle Ages, around the year 1500, I'd say. They looked like they'd been there all night, maybe longer, and were setting up all sorts of stuff. Cooking. Metalworking. Archery. All sorts. See today's pic.
The second wrong turn stumbled us across the test track for the German electro induction, high speed, train called the Transrapid. The project was apparently shelved in 2006 after a crash happened killing 23. Sheltering from the rain under one of the monorail pillars, a German tourist told us all about it.
I found this on Wiki,
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transrapid
400km per hour evidentially.
If you look on a map you can see the strange track near the town of Lathen.
Neither diversion cost us more than five extra miles.
Wasn't easy to find rooms in Oldenburg. But we found two singles in a nice central locale and negotiated a good price.
Next day. Just woke up. Raining again. Really wintery.
