Day in Kelbra
We were treated like royalty today by our lovely German hosts.
We took an early morning walk down the lake and then, at eleven o'clock Helmut and Sigi picked us up in their car. They took us on a tour of the town including inside the town hall. Helmut and Sigi (pictured here with Jackie) were born in Kelbra and built their own house, which they showed us around. The highlight of our tour with them was a trip to, and up to the top of, the Kyffhauser Monument. A massive and impressive structure. Neither of us could recall going up a bigger such structure. Over lunch they told us a lot about the area and about how the reunification of Germany changed their lives (not necessarily for the better).
After lunch we were taken on a tour by Stephie, a freelance reporter, who was covering our visit. She took us to some very old villages and explained many of the customs and traditions. She also took us to a local museum of natural history and local geology. All very good.
Excellent hosts.
