Test Run
This morning Jon showed us his dogs that he keeps for sled-dog tours during winter. James & Geoff had a wonderful time talking, scratching & smooching with these very friendly animals, getting covered in fur while Jon explained about their way of life & work. Continuing the dogs theme we went back to the National Park for lunch & a tour of their kennels including a demonstration & ranger talk. These dogs were all so excited, hoping to be chosen for the sled & so well trained that they returned straight to their places when unharnessed. They're used during the winter instead of snow machines like skidoos which don't function well in the extreme cold. We could walk around them and were lucky enough to see the 8 day old puppies that haven't opened their eyes yet. Our next exciting first was a boat trip on the rapids of Nenana River in the evening from 6-9pm as it stays light so late here. Suited up in drysuits & boots we went down river from Denali to Healy with our guide Rick who did all the paddling while we just held tight. It was so much fun & we did get wet but not saturated as we went through the 9 rapids sections. The new "brave for anything" Jean loved it, along with Geoff & James who couldn't stop smiling! Finally got back to Earthsong and Geoff went for a run at 10.30pm - how strange that it's still quite light at this time here. He managed to avoid the bull moose we'd stopped for on the way back & the only critters he had to deal with were mosquitos!
