Test Run
After a farewell to the crew we disembarked in Juneau, had coffee stop with our new friends & made a visit to the fabric shop (of course). We left Juneau by plane for Anchorage where we met James who'd just arrived from Calgary. Had a great reunion & Facetime with Sarah back home in Brisbane for her birthday today. Spent our time in Anchorage exploring this unusual little city which is not really like anywhere we've been before. There are wide streets, low & high rise buildings, vast car parks but also lots of open spaces. There was a severe earthquake here in 1964 & maybe it hasn't all been replaced. Found the excellent Glacier Brewhouse where you can have a sample tray of 5 different local beers for about $5 - less than my 1 glass of wine! Alaska is home to many specialty boutique breweries with evocative names like "Moose's Tooth" & interesting bar tap handles made from various animal body parts eg tusks, antlers etc. Wandered around some souvenir shops & outdoor clothing stores & found a great gift shop with locally made items. It was Memorial Day here so pretty quiet but we spent a great afternoon in the Anchorage Museum learning a little of the native & western history, watched a planetarium show of the Aurora Borealis & played with giant bubble machines - lots of fun!
