Test Run
Day 5 - Friday - Bay of Pillars Taken by skiff to a landing place where 11 of us set off on an all day hike across the narrow part of Kuiu Island mostly along an old logging road. Made it to a bridge near Port Camden where we stopped in the shade for lunch & a rest. Our guide Hannah was so informative of the local woodland, native stories & even poetry that she made this long trek very enjoyable. Made numerous photo stops & explored one lovely moss covered track to a beaver dam where Geoff waded in the water briefly (very cold). We saw evidence of bears & wolves but no sightings even though this island has a population of 1.5 black bears per square mile. Maybe the regular calls of "hey bear" scared them away! Just made it up the steps of the boat after this walk of 17.5km & straight into the hot tub with a glass of champagne. This was the furthest I've walked for many years & my knees were complaining but it felt like quite an achievement.
