So having said goodbye to our new found masai friends we headed to the train station in hope of getting a ticket for the overnight train. We arrived at the station with little time to spare and Faye, under the impression that everything can be bartered in Africa, insisted on paying half the actual price. She was politely told the price was not negotiable and we reluctantly handed over the $52 pp fare (first class cabin with dinner and breakfast included). We soon found out that Africas version of first class is very different from our own! Within 5 minutes of settling in to our small but cute cabin Fayes worst nightmare appeared, cockroaches. We then went to eat our 3 course meal whicxh included soup, which was not the easiest thing to eat while chug chugging away on a train riding along 120 year old tracks...
Needless to say our night was pretty sleepless due to the cockroaches. We finally drifted off (I was allowed to drift off once faye felt it was safe to sleep) and awoke to one of the most amazing sunrises I have ever seen. It was just orange for miles. We spent the morning with our heads permanently stuck out the train windows taking photos of the african villages we passed through and shouting Jambo (hello in Swahili) to the hundreds of kids that ran to wave at us as we drove through their towns. At one point we passed through on of kenyas national parks and about 5 giraffes were just casually hanging outside our train window! unreal!
About 18 hours after our train journey started we arrived in Nairobi, tired but havng had one of the best experiences either of us have ever had...
