From Vic Falls we headed into Botswana to visit The Okovango Delta. This is one of the things Faye has been most excited to do out of our whole trip so we got up nice and early, showered and packed our stuff for 3 days of bush camping and walking safaris. We were picked up in a huge open top lorry and realised 20 minutes into the drive that shorts and flip flops were not appropriate attire! Bloody freezing, we had to undo all our nicely packed sleeping bags and wrap them round us for the rest of the 3 hour drive. Ridiculous is not the word....
We arrived at the poling station were the journey into the delta begins. Basically you are met by a local person called a poler who puts you and all your stuff into these tiny little canoes called makoros. They are hand made from a single tree called an african sausage tree. I cannot stress how small these canoes actually are! and how unstable you feel in them! We were then poled for an hour and half by Bk (our poler lady) to our camp area.
We set up camp and were shown to the 3 foot hole in the ground where we were informed would be a toilet for the next 3 days. We did not have a shower either.
We then went on a safari bush walk which was very nerve racking as we were not protected by a 4x4 this time. We saw Giraffe, Hippo (out of the water), all types of antelope, Elephant and Buffalo. We had an early night as had to be up again at 5.00 am for another 4 hour bush walk. The next day consisted of more safaris, swimming in the Delta and relaxing.
We took a sunset Mokoro cruise to the HIPPO pools where we were about 10 metres away from them in the waters.
On the last night we were treated to African dancing and songs by the local polers and guides who had stayed with us during the 3 days.
