Find Vicki and Liz
We arrived in San Pedro, just across the boarder from Bolivia by early afternoon. It's a great little town in the middle of the desert that thrives off the steady flow of backpackers, and strangely reminded us both of Ibiza!?!
After finding a hostel, we quickly made our way to a restaurant as we were in need of some hot food and relaxation. Lunch rolled into dinner, were we met up with Stuart and Emily for more food and some excellent mojitos.
The next morning, we all headed on the bus south to Camara, where we made a connection for the 16 hour bus journey to La Serena - another beach resort. After weeks in the developing world, we had hit civilisation. The town was teeming with department stores, and we were in heaven!
We spent the afternoon at the beach and then went to the cinema for the first time in a while.
Next morning, the four of us went to watch the football and then drowned our sorrows over pizza, before getting on the final South American bus ride to Santiago.
Santiago is as European a city as you can get without being there! Plus, despite it being the middle of winter a mini heat wave meant t-shirts all the way. The hostel we checked into had fantastic facilites, meaning we were able to cook for ourselves for the first time in weeks.
We spent a couple of days doing all things touristy. We took a funicular to the top of a hill were there were some great views of the city and the surrounding snow capped Andes and we even went to the zoo (luckily they let us out again). The evenings were spent sipping red wine and playing card games.
It was finally time to bid farewell to the South American mainland and head West - a whole 5 hours across nothing but water to reach the most isolated inhabited island in the world. Easter Island.
